QUICK ANSWER
UCLA’s MFA in Art and CalArts’ MFA Art ask for similar portfolios but run different processes. UCLA asked fall 2026 applicants for up to 20 still images plus up to 12 minutes of time-based work, with the application due January 9, 2026, and no GRE. CalArts asks for about 20 slides with no more than 7 minutes of video, a 30–90-second video introduction, a 500–1,000-word statement and two recommendations, and interviews shortlisted applicants in March.
The public–private difference shows up in funding routes: UCLA applicants can apply for campus-wide merit fellowships such as Cota-Robles; check eligibility, since campus fellowships set their own rules. Check each school’s current cost pages for your year.

Choosing Between Them
Both programmes ask for roughly 20 pieces, so the portfolio can be shared, but the writing and video cannot. CalArts’ statement must answer its own questions, and its introduction video is a separate, unedited piece. UCLA asks you to name an area of study, so the statement should speak to that area.
FOR KOREAN APPLICANTS
Fall 2027 dates were not yet posted when we checked; plan for a deadline in early January. See CalArts portfolio rules and ArtCenter vs CalArts.
