QUICK ANSWER
The clearest sign of CalArts readiness is not drawing skill but a habit of making and explaining work nobody assigned. CalArts’ BFA Art portfolio asks for about 20 images, preferably from the last three years, a 500–1,000-word artist statement and two recommendations, and tells applicants to avoid routine life drawing and still lifes.
So the signs to look for at home are concrete: a sketchbook full of the student’s own ideas, experiments across media including video, and the ability to say in writing why a piece was made.

What CalArts Asks For, and the Sign That Matches
| CalArts asks for | Sign at home |
|---|---|
| About 20 images, last three years preferred | Steady self-directed work over several years, not one summer |
| Artist statement, 500–1,000 words | Can write clearly about their own ideas |
| Avoid routine life drawing and still lifes | Prefers inventing subjects to copying set-ups |
| Videos up to 7 minutes | Already experiments with film, animation or sound |
| Two recommendations | A teacher who knows the work well enough to describe it |

Signs That Point Elsewhere
A student who loves careful rendering from models may fit ArtCenter’s Illustration programme, which asks for 8–12 live figure drawings, better than CalArts Art. A student who wants a set structure from the first day may prefer a department-based school. Neither is a weakness; they are different fits.
FOR KOREAN FAMILIES
CalArts uses its own CalArts Application, not the Common App, so plan a separate timeline. In our record CalArts admitted 16 of our students and funded 7 (44%). See CalArts portfolio guidance and ArtCenter vs CalArts.
