How to Nurture Artistic Talent From an Early Age

QUICK ANSWER

For parents of a young artist, the most useful fact is that admissions clocks start late. Art schools mostly want recent work: CalArts prefers work from the last three years, Tyler from the last one to two, and Pratt asks for 3–5 observational drawings from the last 18 months. So what a child makes at ten will not be in the portfolio; what it builds is habit and skill.

That makes the early years a time for range and daily practice, not for producing “portfolio pieces”. The countable steps come from about age 13.

Habits Worth Building Early

  1. Draw from life. Pratt and SVA require observational pieces later; the skill takes years.
  2. Keep a sketchbook. Process work is invited by RISD and explained at Parsons.
  3. Try many media. Art school first years usually work across media.
  4. Talk about the work. Explaining ideas becomes the essay and statement later.

FOR KOREAN FAMILIES

A child at a U.S. school can enter the Scholastic Awards from age 13; a child living in Korea cannot. See pre-college programmes 2027 (Korean) and signs of readiness for CalArts.
