Harvard VES vs RISD: World’s Top University vs Top Art School

QUICK ANSWER

Harvard and RISD are not two versions of the same choice; they admit students in different ways. Harvard admits you to the college, treats art portfolios as optional (“neither expected nor required”), and you declare a concentration such as Art, Film, and Visual Studies later; the Class of 2029 deadline is October 9 of the second year. RISD admits you on a required portfolio of 12–20 works.

Money runs differently too. Harvard meets 100% of demonstrated need with the same aid for international students, and families earning under $100,000 pay nothing toward the parent contribution. In our record, RISD funded 4 of 68 admits.

The comparison that matters is not prestige but structure. At Harvard, art is one concentration among many in a liberal-arts degree; at RISD, studio work is the degree. If a student wants both a university and an art school, the formal joint route is the Brown–RISD Dual Degree, not Harvard.

FOR KOREAN STUDENTS

Apply to Harvard as an academic applicant who also makes art, and to RISD as an artist; the two applications should not look alike. For RISD planning see RISD Early Decision and the RISD–Brown Dual Degree.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Harvard require an art portfolio?

No. Harvard says supplementary materials are neither expected nor required and should be sent only if they add significantly to the application.

What is AFVS?

Harvard’s Art, Film, and Visual Studies concentration, formerly Visual and Environmental Studies, with studio art, film/video making, and film and visual studies.

When do Harvard students choose AFVS?

Later in college; the Class of 2029 must declare a concentration by October 9.

Can international students get Harvard aid?

Yes. Harvard says international students are eligible for exactly the same need-based aid as American students.

Can I apply to Harvard and RISD early?

Not both. Harvard’s Restrictive Early Action generally rules out early applications to other private colleges, and RISD’s Early Decision is binding; check Harvard’s current policy.
