The RISD-Brown Dual Degree: Is It Worth It?

QUICK ANSWER

For most Korean families, whether the Brown|RISD Dual Degree is “worth it” is first a financial question, then an academic one. The programme takes five years, and all tuition and aid are figured at Brown rates: at least ten semesters of Brown tuition ($74,568 a year for 2026–27).

The other side of that rule is aid. Dual Degree students receive Brown’s need-based aid, which meets 100% of demonstrated need for first-year admits, and Brown is need-blind for international undergraduates starting with the Class of 2029. For a family that qualifies for aid, the Dual Degree can cost less than RISD alone. For a family paying in full, it costs more.

The Brown|RISD Dual Degree (BRDD) is one of the most selective programmes in American higher education. Discussions of it usually focus on prestige and interdisciplinary study. This guide starts with the rules that most affect a Korean applicant’s decision: how the money works, how admission works, and what the five years ask of a student.

BRDD · PART 1

From the Brown|RISD Dual Degree website, checked October 2026.

BRDD · PART 2

How the Money Works

Rule What it means for a Korean family
Tuition at Brown rates At least ten semesters of Brown tuition, plus activity and technology fees at both schools
Aid from Brown Dual Degree students receive Brown’s financial aid package, renewable for five years (reapply each year)
No merit aid Brown does not award aid for academic, athletic or artistic merit
International students Same tuition and aid policies as international applicants to Brown
Leaving the programme You pay the tuition of the school you continue at and receive that school’s aid

From the Dual Degree “Tuition & Aid” page and Brown’s February 2026 announcement.

Compare that with RISD alone. RISD’s 2026–27 tuition is $66,460, and its institutional aid is need-based without a promise to meet full need. Its only merit-style award is for domestic students. In our own records, only 4 of 68 RISD admits received an institutional award.

Tuition at 2026–27 rates Years Total tuition (before aid)
RISD BFA only 4 $265,840
Brown|RISD Dual Degree 5 $372,840

Simple multiplication of current published tuition; future increases, fees, housing and aid are not included.

For a family that pays full price, the Dual Degree adds roughly $107,000 in tuition alone, plus a fifth year of living costs. For a family with demonstrated need, Brown’s aid policy may make the Dual Degree the more affordable path. That is a large difference, and it should be calculated with each school’s net price tools before applying.

How Admission Works

  1. Apply to both schools separately. Brown and RISD each make their own decision, and the Dual Degree decision comes last.
  2. Early Decision covers both. The 1 November Early Decision deadline applies to both Brown and RISD; both communicate early decisions in mid-December.
  3. Regular deadlines differ. Brown’s regular deadline is 5 January; RISD’s is 20 January.
  4. Write one essay well. The Dual Degree essay asks how and why you would use the academic programmes of both schools, and how you would contribute to an interdisciplinary community.
  5. Prepare two portfolios carefully. RISD needs its full portfolio; Brown has its own visual art supplement. Check each school’s instructions.

Because the programme enrolls about 15 students a year, even strong applicants admitted to both schools may not be admitted to the Dual Degree. A student should only apply if they would be glad to attend Brown or RISD on its own. Our guide on Early Decision at RISD covers the binding commitment in more detail.

Who the Dual Degree Fits

A GOOD FIT

A student with a serious academic interest that is not available at RISD — such as computer science, engineering, cognitive science or literature — and a studio practice strong enough for RISD, who wants to connect the two over five years.

A WEAKER FIT

A student who mainly wants the Brown name, or who would be happiest spending all five years in the studio. RISD students can already take some courses at Brown through cross-registration, so the Dual Degree is not the only way to study across both schools. See our Dual Degree explainer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many students are admitted to the Brown|RISD Dual Degree?

The programme says it seeks to enroll a class of about 15 students each year, and that the number admitted is strictly limited.

Do international students get financial aid?

Yes, under Brown’s policy. Dual Degree students receive Brown’s aid package, and Brown is need-blind for international undergraduates starting with the Class of 2029, meeting full demonstrated need for first-year admits.

Is the Dual Degree more expensive than RISD?

At full price, yes: five years at Brown’s rate costs more than four years at RISD’s. With need-based aid, it can cost less, because Brown’s aid policy is more generous than RISD’s.

Can I apply Early Decision to the Dual Degree?

The 1 November Early Decision deadline applies to both Brown and RISD. Read each school’s binding ED rules carefully before applying.

What happens if I leave the Dual Degree?

You continue at one school, pay that school’s tuition and receive that school’s aid.
