QUICK ANSWER
Advertising is hired on ideas, so the “best school” is the one that makes you produce and defend campaign ideas every week — not the one with the most polished student work. In the U.S. there are three routes: a BFA inside an advertising department (SVA’s BFA Advertising is the clearest example, with classes often held at agencies), a design BFA plus a portfolio school, or a graduate program such as VCU Brandcenter’s two-year Master of Science in Business.
The landscape changed recently. ArtCenter folded its former advertising program, now called Creative Direction, into its Graphic Design BFA from fall 2026; Atlanta’s Creative Circus closed after its 2023 class and was relaunched by VCU as online courses. For international students, the deciding factor is often the STEM designation: SVA’s Advertising BFA is on the federal STEM list, which can extend post-graduation work time from 12 to 36 months.
Students who want to work in advertising often start their search with a ranking list. The trouble is that advertising education does not sort neatly by school prestige. The industry hires a portfolio of campaigns — a “book” — and the programs that produce strong books are the ones that train students to generate many ideas, kill most of them, and present the survivors clearly. That is a different skill from rendering, and it shapes which programs are worth your time.
This guide maps the current program options, explains the two creative roles you are training for, and covers the questions that matter most for Korean applicants: language, visas and how to build an application around ideas.
The Two Seats: Art Director and Copywriter
Creative work in agencies is traditionally done by pairs. The art director owns how an idea looks and works across media; the copywriter owns what it says. Both are expected to generate ideas — the job titles describe the craft each brings to the table, not who is allowed to think.
| Art director | Copywriter | |
|---|---|---|
| Core craft | Visual concept, layout, typography, image direction, motion and interactive formats | Headlines, scripts, brand voice, naming, long-form and social writing |
| Portfolio shows | Campaigns across several media, with clear visual systems | Campaigns where the line carries the idea; scripts and writing samples |
| Best-fit training | Advertising or graphic design BFA | Advertising programs with writing focus, journalism or English backgrounds, portfolio schools |
| For Korean applicants | Most realistic entry: visual thinking travels across languages | Possible but demanding: requires native-level English wit and idiom |
Many programs train both seats together, and students often pair up for projects as they would in an agency.
For most Korean students, the art director route is the natural one. That is not a judgment about ability: copywriting in a second language means competing on puns, rhythm and cultural references with native speakers. Bilingual students who are genuinely at home in English writing are the exception, and for them the combination of Korean and English can be a real asset in global work.
The Program Map in 2026
| Program | What it is | Notes for applicants |
|---|---|---|
| SVA — BFA Advertising (New York) | A dedicated advertising department. The department lists art direction, branding, integrated advertising, digital production and strategic thinking as core skills; classes often meet at faculty members’ agencies, with internships in junior and senior years and a student-run agency (AdLab) | Chaired by Gail Anderson. Listed as a STEM program. Portfolio of 15–20 pieces with at least 3 from direct observation |
| ArtCenter — Creative Direction (Pasadena) | Formerly the Bachelor’s in Advertising. From fall 2026 it is integrated into the Graphic Design BFA as a Creative Direction emphasis | New students apply to Graphic Design and choose the emphasis |
| SCAD — Advertising and Branding BFA | An advertising and branding major within SCAD’s design offerings | SCAD does not require a portfolio for admission; it is used for scholarship review |
| Parsons — Communication Design BFA | A graphic and communication design program, adjacent to advertising rather than an ad department | Listed as STEM; a strong route to art direction through design |
| VCU Brandcenter (Richmond) | Two-year, full-time Master of Science in Business with concentrations in art direction, copywriting, creative brand management, experience design and strategy | A graduate option after any bachelor’s degree |
| Portfolio schools | Short, intensive programs focused on building an ad book; Miami Ad School is the best known | Creative Circus closed in 2023; VCU relaunched it as online courses |

Two patterns stand out. First, standalone undergraduate advertising majors are fewer than they were; several schools now teach advertising inside graphic or communication design. Second, the graduate and portfolio-school layer remains important: many working creatives studied design as undergraduates and built their ad books afterward.
Why STEM Status Matters More in Advertising
Advertising hiring is cyclical and often runs through internships and freelance work before a staff offer. For an international graduate, the length of post-graduation work authorization can decide whether that path is realistic. Under F-1 rules, standard OPT lasts 12 months; programs whose CIP code is on the federal STEM list can extend it by 24 months.
| Program | STEM status (published) |
|---|---|
| SVA — BFA Advertising | Listed as STEM (CIP 09.0702) |
| Parsons — BFA Communication Design | Listed as STEM |
| Pratt — BFA Communications Design | Listed as STEM (CIP 09.0702) |
| Illustration and fine art programs | Generally not STEM |
Designations change and are set per program. Our STEM OPT guide explains the rules and why “not listed” does not always mean “not eligible.”
This is one of the few places where school choice changes your career options in a measurable way. Two programs with similar teaching can leave an international graduate with very different amounts of time to land a first job.
Pay and the Market — What the Data Says
Federal data does not track advertising creatives as a single occupation. The closest categories are art directors and graphic designers. In the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release, the national median annual wage was $114,850 for art directors and $62,960 for graphic designers. Art director is usually a mid-career title rather than a first job, so most graduates start closer to the design figure.
Location matters as much as title. New York, Los Angeles and Chicago concentrate agency jobs, and in-house creative teams at brands and technology companies now employ many art directors outside traditional agencies. Our guide to first jobs after art school compares the major cities, and freelance income structures covers the project-based work common early in a career.
Building an Application Around Ideas
Undergraduate admissions portfolios still follow each school’s rules — piece counts, observational drawing requirements, upload formats. Within those rules, an applicant aiming at advertising can show how they think.
- Include one or two campaign projects. Take a real product or cause, write a one-line insight, and show how the idea works across three media — a poster, a social post, an outdoor or experiential piece.
- Show the thinking, not only the result. A page of thumbnails with rejected ideas tells reviewers more about advertising aptitude than a single polished layout.
- Keep the drawing foundation. SVA requires work from direct observation even for Advertising; art directors still sketch ideas by hand before they go to the computer.
- Write a little. Even art directors need headlines that work. A few short lines of copy on your campaign pieces show you understand how words and images combine.
- Choose work that reads at a glance. Advertising is judged in seconds; if a piece needs a paragraph of explanation, rethink it.
Students drawn to the strategy side should also look at related fields: service design and brand strategy overlap with advertising, and our guide to becoming an art director traces the career path in more detail.
Korean Students: Strengths and Gaps
Korean applicants often bring strong visual craft and design discipline, and Korea’s own advertising and branding culture is sophisticated and fast-moving. The common gap is the opposite of what students expect: not skill, but the habit of generating many rough ideas quickly and arguing for one. Students trained to perfect a single piece can find it uncomfortable to show half-formed thumbnails — yet that is what advertising critique runs on.
The second gap is language in critique. Advertising classes involve presenting and defending ideas out loud, often to working professionals. Practising short, clear spoken pitches in English before starting school pays off more in this major than in most others.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SVA the only real choice for advertising?
It is the clearest example of a dedicated undergraduate advertising department, but not the only route. Many art directors studied graphic or communication design and built their advertising book later, through internships, portfolio schools or a graduate program such as VCU Brandcenter.
Can I still apply to ArtCenter for advertising?
ArtCenter’s former advertising program, renamed Creative Direction, is being integrated into the Graphic Design BFA from fall 2026. Students entering from then on who want this focus apply to Graphic Design and choose the Creative Direction emphasis.
Do I need a portfolio school after my BFA?
Not necessarily. Graduates of strong advertising departments often enter the industry directly. Portfolio schools are most useful for people who studied something else, or whose book needs focused work on campaign thinking.
Should a Korean student aim for copywriting?
Only if English writing is genuinely a strength — copywriting competes on wit and idiom. Most Korean students find art direction the more natural entry, while still writing headlines for their own campaigns.
Will AI replace advertising creatives?
AI tools are already part of production, and SVA’s department lists AI workflows among its workshop topics. The parts of the job that matter most — finding the insight, choosing the idea, and persuading a client — remain human work. For applications, check each school’s policy: several prohibit AI-generated images in admissions portfolios.
