7 Portfolio Mistakes Korean Students Make — And How to Fix Them

QUICK ANSWER

Many avoidable portfolio mistakes are not about skill. They are breaches of a written rule: drawing from photographs where RISD discourages it, work older than Pratt’s 18-month window, fan art where PNCA and ArtCenter Entertainment Arts reject it, too many pieces for Parsons, combined PDFs where CalArts wants one image per slide, undisclosed AI, and no observation where Pratt asks for it.

Each one is easy to fix once you know which school’s rule it breaks. Here are the seven, with the rule behind each.

A Final Check Before Upload

  1. List each school’s count, date window and banned content on one page.
  2. Tag every piece with date, medium, size and whether it was drawn from life.
  3. Remove anything that breaks a rule at any school you send it to.
  4. Check file format against each platform: CalArts’ own application, SlideRoom or the school portal.

FOR KOREAN STUDENTS

Some of these mistakes can come from habits of timed, photo-based exam drawing. See what entrance art training gives and does not give and portfolio specifications by school.
