SVA Advertising: the senior year is a working agency
Ad Lab is a student-run agency with real clients, and the fourth-year portfolio course has an Agency track built around it. The faculty come from McCann, FCB, R/GA and DeVito/Verdi. This is what the degree behind that looks like, course code by course code.
SVA has disclosed a structural deficit of roughly $22 million, the largest in its history. Enrolment has fallen sharply since 2019, cost reductions began under an interim president in July 2026, and in August the faculty union reported that a large number of courses and foundation sections had been cancelled. No closure has been announced.
This department’s third year is built almost entirely from electives. That structure is a strength when everything runs and a risk when sections are cut, so ask the admissions office which of the courses below actually ran last year.
Advertising is the SVA department Korean applicants dismiss fastest and understand least. The word 광고 suggests a commercial trade rather than an art degree, and Korean art academies almost never prepare a portfolio for it. Meanwhile it is one half of a two-department pairing under a single chair, it shares a building and a fabrication lab with SVA Design, and it graduates students who have run client work.
This article covers the BFA in Advertising as SVA publishes it: the shared chair, the course sequence with codes, the Ad Lab, the agency roster on the faculty list, and an honest comparison against the design department next door — which is where most applicants reading this will end up choosing between.
01 — LeadershipTwo departments, one chair
Gail Anderson chairs both the BFA Advertising and BFA Design departments. Separately, Kevin T. O’Callaghan is listed as chair of the 3D design program within both departments — a program that runs across the pair rather than inside one of them.
Anderson’s published framing of the discipline is worth quoting because it is not what a Korean applicant expects an advertising department to say: good advertising is about analysing behavioural patterns and pursuing innovative thinking. Not selling. Not slogans. Behaviour and thinking.
SVA also claims two firsts for the department: it says it was the first to offer guerrilla advertising courses, and the first to teach advertising without headlines. We report both as the school’s claims. What they indicate is a department that has historically defined itself against the conventional shape of the discipline.
02 — First yearA first year that is not the design department’s
Advertising and Design sit under one chair, but their first years are genuinely different, and the difference tells you what each department thinks a beginner needs.
| First year | BFA Advertising | BFA Design |
|---|---|---|
| Drawing | ADD-1030 Foundations of Drawing I | FID-1130 / 1135 Drawing I and II |
| Computing | DSD-1050 / 1055 Visual Computing in the Studio I and II | SMD-1020 Foundations of Visual Computing |
| Shared | ADD-1010 / 1015 Principles of Visual Language I and II · DSD-1040 Fabrication and Innovation · DSD-1005 Thinking Design (no credit) · HCD-1020 / 1025 writing · AHD-1010 / 1021 art history | |
From SVA’s published curricula for the two departments, September 2026.
Advertising takes one drawing course and two semesters of studio computing; Design takes two drawing courses and one computing course. That is a small, honest signal: the advertising student is being pushed toward the screen a semester earlier, and the design student is being kept at the drawing board a semester longer.
03 — Second yearWhere the department actually starts
| Code | Course | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| ADD-2030 / 2035 | Advertising Fundamentals I and II | 3 + 3 |
| ADD-2036 / 2037 | Fearless Branding I and II | 2 + 2 |
| ADD-2040 | Creative Problem Solving | 2 |
| HWD-2042 | Copywriting Fundamentals — taken as a humanities course | 3 |
| AHD-2121 | History of Advertising — taken as an art history course | 3 |
| DSD-2050 / 2055 | Fundamentals of Typography I and II | 2 + 2 |
| DSD-2090 / 2095 | Click, Touch, Move: Designing for Interactive Experiences I and II | 3 + no credit |
| DSD-2005 · DSD-2060 | Design Thinking (no credit) · Intermediate Drawing I | — · 2 |
From SVA’s published BFA Advertising curriculum, September 2026. Students take one course per category.
Two placements in that table are the article’s most useful detail for a Korean applicant.
Copywriting is a humanities course. HWD-2042 counts toward the 30 humanities credits, not the studio 72. The department is stating, structurally, that writing is an academic discipline here and not a studio skill picked up on the side.
History of Advertising is an art history course. AHD-2121 counts toward the 15 art history credits, alongside European painting surveys. Advertising is being taught as something with a canon.
For a student whose English is a second language, the first of those two is the honest warning in this article. A degree that files copywriting under humanities is a degree where the writing is assessed as writing. That is not a reason to avoid the department — but it is a reason to sit the English test seriously rather than to the minimum.
04 — Third yearNine credits you choose yourself
The third year is one required advertising studio — ADD-3207 Advanced Advertising I, ADD-3217 Advanced Advertising II or ADD-3542 Think Tank — plus nine credits chosen from five named areas. The list is long enough that it is worth showing what is actually available rather than summarising it.
| Area | Courses SVA lists |
|---|---|
| Design for Emerging Media | 3D Design in Cinema 4D I and II · Creative Coding · Advanced Creative Coding · DSD-3711 AI in Design and Art: Tools and Technique · DSD-3821 Spatial Design in XR · DSD-3832 Visual Programming in TouchDesigner |
| Graphic Design | Design for Social Change I and II · Graphic Design in Fashion · Building a Fashion Brand · Fashion: The Campaign · DSD-3389 Art Direction as a Career for Advertising and Design · Branding · Poster Design · Environmental Design: Spatial Branding · Intermediate Typography I and II · Design Synthesis |
| Interaction Design | Introduction to Interaction Design · Interaction Design and Communication I and II · Product Design Theory and Application I and II · Beyond the Rectangle I and II |
| Motion Graphics | Introduction to Motion Graphics · Motion Graphics I and II · Design in Motion I and II |
| Honors | Visual Identity and Multimedia · Many Types of Creativity · Design, Content, and Not Losing Yourself in the Deluge · Yearbook I |
From SVA’s published BFA Advertising curriculum, September 2026. All listed at 3 studio credits. Offerings rotate — see the finance note above.
Three items in that list are unusual enough to name again. AI in Design and Art is a credited undergraduate course, not a workshop. Spatial Design in XR and Beyond the Rectangle both describe work that leaves the screen. And Art Direction as a Career is exactly what it says — a course about the job, taught inside the degree.
The structural risk is the mirror image of the strength. A year assembled from thirty-odd electives depends on those electives running. That is the specific question to put to admissions this cycle.
05 — Fourth yearPortfolio, or Portfolio: Agency
The fourth year is a portfolio year with a fork in it. SVA lists four portfolio courses, and two of them carry the word Agency:
ADD-4101 Advertising Portfolio I · ADD-4111 Advertising Portfolio II — 3 studio credits each
ADD-4106 Advertising Portfolio I: Agency · ADD-4116 Advertising Portfolio II: Agency — 3 studio credits each
ADD-4300 Real World 101 · ADD-4400 Intellectual Property and the Law — both listed with no credit
The Agency track connects to Ad Lab, which SVA describes as a senior student-led agency working with real clients. A portfolio built inside a live client relationship is a different object from one built to a brief written by a tutor: it carries constraints someone else set, revisions someone else demanded, and work that shipped.
Note the credit values on the last line. In the design department next door, Real World 101 and Intellectual Property and the Law appear as credit-bearing fourth-year options; in advertising, SVA lists them with no credit. Same two subjects, two different weights, two departments under one chair. If those courses matter to you — and the IP one should, to anyone planning to freelance — check how they are carried in the year you enrol.
06 — FacultyAgencies, not studios
| Faculty member | How SVA describes them |
|---|---|
| Vinny Garballano | Vice president, creative director, McCann NY |
| Chris Lane | Senior copywriter, McCann New York |
| Alexei Beltrone | Group creative director, FCB New York |
| Gio Serrano | Creative director, R/GA |
| Vinny Tulley | Creative director, DeVito/Verdi |
| Aimee Rancer | Creative lead, Amazon Ads |
| Michael Bong | Senior brand strategist, associate director, Jones Knowles Ritchie |
| Kevin T. O’Callaghan | Chair, 3D design program, BFA Advertising and BFA Design departments |
Titles reproduced from SVA’s published faculty listing, September 2026. SVA also names Google, Pentagram, HBO, Amazon and Madison Square Garden among faculty employers, and states that faculty have won Emmy Awards, Cannes Lions, Clios and One Show honours.
Set this roster beside the design department’s and the pairing makes sense. Design’s faculty list is built on studios — six people affiliated with Pentagram. Advertising’s is built on agencies — McCann, FCB, R/GA, DeVito/Verdi. Two rooms, one chair, two different professional worlds walking in the door.
SVA adds that classes are often held at instructor agencies. That is worth more to an international student than it sounds: it converts a commute into access to buildings you cannot otherwise enter.
07 — AccessInternships, Industry Day, and the labs
SVA names the places its advertising students have interned: Disney, Google, Wasserman, McCann, Ogilvy and Wieden + Kennedy, among others. It also runs portfolio reviews and an Industry Day that it says brings more than 300 creative professionals into the building.
The department shares two facilities with SVA Design: the Wilde Fabrication Lab, with 3D printers, embroidery machines, UV printers and laser cutters, and the Digital Imaging Center, with photography studios, large-format printing, bookbinding and risograph. An advertising department with an embroidery machine and a UV printer is one that expects campaigns to become objects.
We report the internship list as SVA’s, not as placements we arrange. The number that carries more weight for a prospective student is the 300 professionals at Industry Day, because it is a recurring structure rather than a set of past outcomes.
08 — ComparisonAdvertising or Design?

Compiled from SVA’s two published curricula and faculty listings, September 2026.
The honest decision rule is narrow. If you want to make the thing — the identity, the book, the interface — Design’s typography requirement and studio faculty point that way. If you want to decide what the thing should say and then get it made by a team, Advertising’s copywriting requirement, agency faculty and client-facing senior year point that way. Both degrees are 120 credits under the same chair, and a student who chooses wrongly at seventeen is not stranded — but the third and fourth years diverge sharply, and that is where the cost of a wrong guess lands.
09 — MoneyCost, English and the calendar
SVA’s tuition is $27,635 per semester, $55,270 a year — the lowest in this series, against Parsons at $62,348 plus a $1,440 services fee, CalArts at $62,954, Pratt at $64,703 and RISD at $66,460. Housing runs roughly $18,700 to $23,300 and health insurance about $3,590, putting a realistic total in the mid-to-high eighties of thousands.
English requirements are TOEFL 4.5 on the scale ETS introduced in January 2026 and Duolingo 115. For this department in particular, treat those as a floor rather than a target: a degree that files copywriting under humanities will ask you to write in English for a grade.
The date to get right. SVA’s 1 February deadline is the scholarship consideration deadline, not the application deadline. Early Action closes 1 December and is not binding; applications continue on a rolling basis afterwards.
A late application can still be admitted — into a scholarship pool already allocated.
10 — Our recordWhat our own placements show
Royal Blue keeps a record of every acceptance we have confirmed directly with the student: 1,099 acceptances across 95 schools between 2009 and 2026, of which 454 carried scholarship money — an award rate of 41.3% and $23,746,972 in total.
Every acceptance in this record was confirmed directly with the student. Acceptances we could not verify are not counted — so the real total is higher than the one we publish. Every average below carries the number of awards it rests on.
| In our record | Acceptances | Awards | Award rate | Average award |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SVA, all majors | 140 | 41 | 29% | $58,944 (41 awards) |
| Communication Design, all schools | 95 | 51 | 54% | $53,490 (51 awards) |
| Graphic Design, all schools | 211 | 77 | 36% | $48,591 (77 awards) |
| All majors, all schools | 1,099 | 454 | 41.3% | $52,306 (454 awards) |
Royal Blue admissions records, 2009–2026. Initial award letters. Advertising is not a separate line in our record; students we place into this field are filed under the design labels above.
There is no Advertising row, and we are not going to create one. Korean applicants reach this department in small numbers — which is itself the most useful thing we can tell you about it. A department that few Korean students apply to is a department where a Korean applicant is not competing against a queue of near-identical portfolios from Seoul.
That is an argument about odds, not about quality, and it should not on its own move anyone into a discipline they do not want. But if you have read this far and the copywriting requirement did not put you off, it is worth knowing that the field is less crowded from where you are standing.
We publish no admission rate for BFA Advertising. SVA does not publish one at department level and we will not calculate one from our caseload.
Internship hosts, award counts, rankings and the two historical firsts in section 01 are SVA’s own claims, reproduced as such. They are not placements we arrange or outcomes we promise.
Course codes, credit values and elective lists were read from SVA pages in September 2026 and rotate by year. In a department whose third year is built from electives, confirm what is running before you plan around it.
FAQFrequently asked questions
Do I need to write English well to study advertising here?
You need to be willing to. HWD-2042 Copywriting Fundamentals is a required second-year course taken as a humanities credit, and the discipline is built on language. SVA’s published minimums are TOEFL 4.5 and Duolingo 115; for this department treat them as a floor.
What is Ad Lab?
SVA describes it as a senior student-led agency working with real clients. It connects to the fourth-year Agency portfolio courses, ADD-4106 and ADD-4116 — so a student can build their graduating portfolio out of live client work rather than out of self-set briefs.
Is the portfolio for applying different from a design portfolio?
SVA reads a general art portfolio for undergraduate admission, so the requirement is the same. What differs is what stands out: for this department, a project where you decided what to say and then made it — a campaign, a poster series with an argument, anything with a clear idea behind the craft — reads more strongly than another rendered illustration.
Advertising or Design?
Design if you want to make the artefact; Advertising if you want to decide the idea and direct the making. The faculty lists are the clearest signal: Design’s is built on studios including six people affiliated with Pentagram, Advertising’s on agencies including McCann, FCB and R/GA.
Should SVA’s finances change my decision?
They should change your questions. No closure has been announced. This department’s third year is elective-heavy, so ask which of those courses ran last year and which are scheduled, and apply by 1 February to be inside the scholarship pool rather than after it.
