QUICK ANSWER
Seoul’s design status rests on a few verifiable milestones: World Design Capital in 2010, Zaha Hadid’s Dongdaemun Design Plaza opening on March 21, 2014, and Frieze Seoul reaching its fifth edition in September 2026.
For a student applying to U.S. art schools, the practical value is not prestige. It is access: a city full of exhibitions, buildings and crowds to draw from, research and document, which is exactly the first-hand material admissions portfolios ask for.

What This Means for a Portfolio
- Observation is required by many schools. Several schools we cover ask for work from direct observation, and a city like Seoul gives you subjects every day, from DDP’s curved façade to market crowds.
- Research becomes visible. Sketchbooks with notes from exhibitions show admissions readers how you think, not only what you finished.
- Process can be documented on site. Photograph the place, the sketch and the studio version together, so the sequence reads clearly.
- Art-fair week is a research week. With Frieze Seoul and Kiaf SEOUL in partnership each September, students can see international galleries without leaving the city.
WHAT IT DOES NOT MEAN
A city’s design reputation does not substitute for a strong individual portfolio, and no admissions office gives credit for being from Seoul. Use the city as material, not as a claim.
