Do Not Carry Undergraduate Numbers Into MFA Planning

This is the correction most worth making, because Korean families researching an MFA usually arrive having already read about undergraduate admissions at the same schools.

Royal Blue has recorded 1,099 acceptances across 95 schools since 2012. That archive is built from undergraduate art and design admissions. RISD appears 68 times and Parsons 63 — but every one of those is a BFA-level record, and we hold no MFA data for either school.

The same caution applies to figures you find elsewhere. Precise “MFA acceptance rate” or “average funding” numbers are rarely published by schools themselves, so a figure appearing without a citation was constructed by someone. Ask where it came from before you plan around it.

We would rather say plainly that we do not have MFA data than publish an estimate that looks authoritative. Our undergraduate figures are shown below only to demonstrate how widely funding varies between institutions — not as a prediction about either graduate programme.

The spread — 82% down to 6% — is the point, not any individual row. Institutions differ enormously in how much of their published price they return, and that variation is not predictable from reputation. The reason to ask each MFA programme directly is that the same unpredictability applies there.

One further note on graduate timing that does transfer as a habit. At some schools aid is decided after admission, not with it. Yale School of Art’s financial aid deadline is March 1 with verification documents due April 15 — after decisions. Plan the family conversation for spring rather than winter.

The Questions to Ask Each Programme

1. What proportion of admitted students receive funding, and in what form? Fellowship, assistantship and tuition remission are different things with different obligations. Ask which applies.

2. Are international applicants eligible on the same terms? Some instruments — particularly teaching appointments — carry visa or residency conditions. This is the question most Korean applicants forget to ask.

3. Does support cover all years of the programme, or only the first? An offer letter describes year one. A two- or three-year MFA needs the renewal terms confirmed.

4. What is excluded? Tuition support is not living costs. Providence and Manhattan differ substantially, and for a two-year programme that difference compounds. Ask for the programme’s own cost-of-attendance figure rather than estimating.

These are ordinary questions and admissions offices answer them. Asking in writing before you apply costs nothing; assuming costs two years of tuition.

How to Decide Between Them

RISD if your practice is material-led and you want depth, facilities and concentrated studio time in a smaller city. The name carries international weight, which matters for a graduate degree in a way it matters less at BFA level.

Parsons if you want your work situated in cultural and social context, and if New York access — galleries, industry, part-time practice — is part of what the two years are for.
