How to Find an Art Academy That Has Sent Students to CalArts

QUICK ANSWER

You cannot audit an academy’s CalArts record from outside, because CalArts does not publish which academy an admitted student attended. What you can test is whether the academy knows CalArts’ current rules in detail. CalArts programmes ask for very different portfolios, each programme is a separate application with its own fee, and the December deadline is not Early Decision.

An academy with real CalArts experience will answer the six questions below without looking them up. Royal Blue’s own record lists 15 CalArts acceptances among 1,099 since 2009, a figure too small for us to quote any percentage from.

Six Questions to Ask an Academy

  1. “What does Character Animation require that other schools do not?” A strong answer mentions a minimum of 15 observational pieces including life drawing with faces, hands and feet, drawing from real life, and a full sketchbook filmed in one take of up to 10 minutes.
  2. “How is Experimental Animation different?” CalArts says figure, landscape, still life and perspective drawings are generally not acceptable for Experimental Animation. An academy that prepares both the same way is a warning sign.
  3. “Can my child apply to two programmes?” Yes, but each needs its own application and fee.
  4. “Is December 1 Early Decision?” No. CalArts calls it the preferred deadline, with a lower fee; it is not binding.
  5. “What should not go in the portfolio?” For Character Animation: traced pictures, copies of others’ work, erased construction lines on observational drawings, and multiple images combined into one file.
  6. “How many CalArts acceptances have you had, in which programmes and which years?” Ask for counts and years, not percentages.

CalArts Rules That Matter for Fall 2027

ItemWhat CalArts says
Preferred deadlineDecember 1, 2026 (fee $65); not Early Decision
Regular deadlineJanuary 5, 2027 (fee $85); rolling afterwards until each programme closes
More than one programmeAllowed; separate application and fee for each
Character Animation portfolioAt least 15 observational pieces, other creative work, a filmed sketchbook, artist statement, two recommendations and a 30–90 second video introduction
Cost of attendance$90,455 for 2026–27, including tuition of $62,954

From CalArts’ Application Deadlines and Fees page, BFA Character Animation requirements and cost of attendance, checked October 2026.

Programmes sit in different schools within CalArts. Character Animation and Experimental Animation are in the School of Film/Video, and Graphic Design is in the School of Art. Their portfolios differ more than most families expect, so “CalArts experience” should always mean experience with a specific programme.

FOR KOREAN FAMILIES

Training built on observational drawing suits Character Animation. The same strength can work against an Experimental Animation applicant if the portfolio is built from figure and still-life studies. Ask the academy which programme its CalArts acceptances came from. For costs, see our CalArts cost analysis.
