Artist Statement for Art School Application: A Complete Guide

QUICK ANSWER

There is no single “artist statement” for art school applications. Each school asks a different question, at a different length. Pratt wants 250–500 words about a work that influenced you or one of your own; Parsons wants two essays of 300–400 words on an issue you care about and why its programme fits; CalArts Character Animation asks three specific questions; RISD uses the Common App essay.

Write one honest core about your work, then answer each school’s actual prompt. A statement that answers the wrong question is an easily avoided weakness.

How to Write One Core and Many Answers

  1. Start from one piece of your own work. Pratt, UBC and Emily Carr all ask you to write about specific work.
  2. Say what you made, how and why. Concrete process beats general claims about passion.
  3. Answer the prompt in the first lines. Parsons’ two essays ask different questions; do not merge them.
  4. Keep to the word range. 250–500 at Pratt is not 650.
  5. Write it yourself. Pratt does not permit AI writing tools, and readers look for your own voice.

FOR KOREAN STUDENTS

Draft in Korean if it helps you think, but write the final version in English yourself, with feedback on clarity rather than a rewrite. A plain, specific statement in your own English is stronger than polished language that does not sound like you. See the Parsons essays and originality rules.
