QUICK ANSWER
Before applying to SVA, a Korean student needs to settle three things. One department: SVA asks you to choose a single programme, and double majors are not possible. One date: 1 February 2027 is the postmark deadline for freshman scholarship consideration. Applications after it are still reviewed on a rolling basis, but scholarship review needs that date and a GPA of at least 3.0. One portfolio: 15–20 images for most majors, with at least three drawn from direct observation.

SVA has reported serious financial pressure in 2026, including a structural deficit of about $22 million and course cancellations; no closure has been announced. For most Korean applicants, the practical target is Early Action on 1 December. It gives an earlier answer and leaves the scholarship deadline comfortably met. There is no separate scholarship form: applicants who meet the deadline with a minimum 3.0 GPA are reviewed automatically.

The three observational pieces are a minimum. A Korean student trained in exam-style drawing usually has many of those already. The harder part is usually the rest of the portfolio: personal projects that show what the student wants to make in their chosen department. Our guide to what makes a strong portfolio covers that.

EVA (English and the Visual Arts) is SVA’s programme for applicants below the BFA minimums. Admitted EVA students seeking BFA consideration must submit qualifying scores by 1 June.
TOEFL changed its scoring in January 2026, so check which scale applies to your test date. A student who falls a little short may still be admitted through EVA, but should plan for the extra time that involves.

Can I apply to more than one department at SVA?
No. Applicants select one programme, and double majors are not possible. Cross-registration into other departments may be allowed with the chair’s permission.
