QUICK ANSWER
For most artists and designers the MFA is the studio degree that leads to teaching and practice. A PhD in art or design is a research degree, and the first thing to check is who pays for it. Programmes differ sharply. NC State’s PhD in Design says it provides full tuition, a stipend and health insurance. IIT’s Institute of Design says funding is “extremely limited” and considers only self-funded applicants, at $2,155 per credit hour for 92 credit hours. In the UK, Dundee lists an international PhD fee of £24,720 per year for 2026/27.
So a Korean student thinking about a doctorate should first ask what research question they want to answer, then look for a programme that will fund that research.
This page is for students and families looking a long way ahead, past the BFA and the MFA. We prepare students for undergraduate admission, so we have kept to what programmes publish and to the decisions that matter early.

MFA or PhD: Different Purposes
| MFA | PhD in art or design | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Develop a studio or design practice | Produce new research, in writing and sometimes through practice |
| Typical entry | BFA or equivalent plus a portfolio | Master’s degree (usually) plus a research proposal |
| Main output | A body of work and thesis exhibition | A dissertation; some programmes accept practice as part of it |
| Who it suits | Practising artists and designers | Researchers, academics, design research roles |
General comparison; each programme sets its own requirements.
The UK and parts of Europe have a stronger tradition of practice-led doctorates, where making work is part of the research method. In the United States, design PhDs tend to centre on design research, and studio artists more often stop at the MFA.

Three Funding Models
| Programme | What it publishes |
|---|---|
| NC State PhD in Design (U.S.) | Full tuition, stipend and health insurance provided to students; support maintained for at least three years since 1999 |
| IIT Institute of Design PhD (U.S.) | Funding “extremely limited”; only self-funded applicants considered; $2,155 per credit hour (2024–25 rate); 92 credit hours |
| University of Dundee, art and design research (UK) | International fee £24,720 per year of study for 2026/27; IELTS 6.5 overall |

These three examples show why the funding question comes first. A funded U.S. doctorate pays the student to do research. A self-funded one can cost more than an undergraduate degree. UK fees sit in between but rarely include living costs.

What a Korean Student Can Do Now
- Build a strong undergraduate record. A BFA with good writing and research courses keeps both MFA and PhD routes open. Our guide to BFA vs BA explains the difference.
- Write about your work early. Research degrees depend on clear writing in English. Artist statements, essays and critiques are good practice.
- Treat the MFA as the usual next step. For a studio career, a funded MFA is often the better target. See our page on Yale’s funded MFA.
- Choose a PhD by question and funding. Look for faculty whose research matches yours, and programmes that fund students.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a PhD better than an MFA for teaching art?
Not necessarily. The MFA is widely treated as the terminal degree for studio practice. A PhD suits research-focused roles and some design academic posts.
Are art and design PhDs funded?
Some are. NC State’s PhD in Design states it provides full tuition, a stipend and health insurance. IIT’s Institute of Design considers only self-funded applicants. Always check before applying.
What does a design PhD cost if self-funded?
At IIT’s Institute of Design, tuition was $2,155 per credit hour in 2024–25 across 92 credit hours, before fees and living costs.
Can I do a practice-based PhD?
Practice-led doctorates are more common in the UK and Europe. Check each programme’s description of how creative practice counts toward the degree.
Do I need a master’s degree first?
Usually. Dundee, for example, normally expects a master’s but accepts applications directly after undergraduate study.
ROYAL BLUE ART & DESIGN
For 19 years we have prepared Korean students for U.S. art schools from our studio in Apgujeong, Seoul. Our public record lists 1,099 acceptances confirmed directly with students. A strong BFA application is the first step on any of these paths, and we help students build the portfolio and writing habits that later degrees depend on. Call 02-3446-5929 or book a consultation.
