Art school rankings are useful only if you know which list you are reading. The U.S. News “Fine Arts” ranking often quoted for undergraduates is a graduate ranking; U.S. News does not rank undergraduate fine arts by field. QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 does rank Art & Design worldwide, placing RISD 4th, Pratt 5th and SAIC 11th, but it ranks institutions, not individual majors.
So use rankings to build a first list, then check the things they cannot show: your major, the portfolio rules, funding and cost.

- Undergraduate or graduate? The U.S. News fine arts list is graduate.
- Institution or programme? QS ranks institutions, not your major.
- Which year? Rankings change; quote the edition.
- What does it leave out? Funding, cost and portfolio fit never appear in a rank.
