For an international student a waitlist is mainly a timeline problem. Most schools ask admitted students to decide by May 1, and waitlist offers can come after that. A late offer then has to fit a deposit, an I-20, a visa appointment and housing, each with its own deadline.
The safe approach: accept a place at another school by its deadline, stay on the waitlist you care about, and prepare documents early so that a late offer can still be used.

Because of these steps, a waitlist offer in June or July is more workable for a student who already has bank documents, a passport and a visa plan ready than for one who starts from nothing.

What to Do While You Wait
- Confirm you want to stay on the list. Follow the instructions in the waitlist letter; many schools ask you to opt in.
- Commit elsewhere on time. Pay the deposit at your best confirmed school by its deadline, and ask whether it is refundable.
- Send a short update if the school allows it. New work or results, and a clear statement that you would enrol if admitted. See our guide to letters of continued interest.
- Prepare documents early. Financial documents for an I-20, a valid passport and a visa appointment plan.
- Ask about funding. A late offer may come with a different scholarship picture; ask in writing before accepting.
