Being waitlisted at an art school is neither admission nor rejection — it is a holding position that requires its own specific strategy. Many Korean students are unsure how to respond when they receive a waitlist notification. This post explains what art school waitlists mean, what you can do, and how to make decisions under this uncertainty.
What a Waitlist Notification Means
A waitlist means: the school found your application competitive but could not offer you a spot in the initial admission round. If admitted students decline their offers (between decision notification and May 1), the school may extend offers to waitlisted applicants.
Important facts about art school waitlists:
- Waitlisted applicants are not ranked internally — you typically do not know where you stand
- There is no guarantee that any waitlisted applicants will be admitted — in some years, waitlists are not moved at all
- Waitlist movement typically happens between May 1 and late June, as enrolled students withdraw
- Some schools manage waitlists through summer — late waitlist offers can arrive in July or August
Step 1: Decide Whether You Want to Stay on the Waitlist
Most schools ask waitlisted applicants to confirm whether they wish to remain on the waitlist. This is not an automatic process — you must actively confirm your continued interest.
Before confirming, decide: Do you genuinely want to attend this school if offered admission — even if the offer arrives in June or July? If another school offered you a better scholarship and you’ve already committed there (by May 1), accepting a late waitlist offer would require breaking that commitment, which has financial and logistical consequences.
Be honest with yourself: if you’ve been admitted to a school you’re genuinely excited about, the waitlist position at your reach school may not be worth holding onto. Release it for other waitlisted applicants.
Step 2: Write a Letter of Continued Interest
If you decide to remain on the waitlist, send the admissions office a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI). This is a brief (1 to 2 page) written communication that:
- Confirms your strong and specific interest in attending if offered admission
- Shares any meaningful updates to your application since submission (new portfolio work, awards, completed projects, improved TOEFL scores)
- Explains specifically why this school is your first choice among your options
The LOCI is not a formality — it is a genuine opportunity to update your case. An exceptionally strong LOCI with genuinely new portfolio work can meaningfully improve your position.
What a good art school LOCI includes:
- A specific explanation of why this school (not generic art school reasons — specific program culture, specific faculty, specific resources)
- 2 to 3 images of new work completed since submission (if school policy allows attachments)
- A brief paragraph explaining what has developed in your creative practice since application
Send the LOCI promptly after receiving the waitlist notification — do not wait until May.
Step 3: Make a Commitment by May 1 Regardless
You cannot hold your spot at another admitted school past May 1 while waiting for a waitlist decision. By May 1, you must choose one school and commit. This means:
If you are waitlisted at RISD and admitted to Parsons, you must commit to Parsons by May 1 (or another school you’ve been admitted to). You can remain on the RISD waitlist simultaneously — but you are formally enrolled at Parsons until and unless RISD makes a waitlist offer.
If RISD makes a waitlist offer in June or July, you would need to withdraw from Parsons — potentially losing your enrollment deposit. This is a real financial cost to factor into your decision about whether remaining on the waitlist is worth it.
What to Expect in Terms of Probability
Art school waitlist movement rates are not consistently published. General patterns:
- In high-demand years (high yield rates), waitlists move very little
- In lower-yield years, more offers may be extended
- Most movement happens in early May and June; some schools continue waitlist offers through late summer
There is no reliable way to know your individual probability of receiving a waitlist offer. Treat the waitlist as a possibility — not a probability — and make your primary decisions (commitment, enrollment deposit, visa application) based on the offers you have in hand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I visit the school I’m waitlisted at to demonstrate interest? Visiting demonstrates interest but is typically not expected and may not significantly affect waitlist decisions at art schools. A well-written LOCI and strong new portfolio work are more influential than an in-person visit.
Can I appeal a waitlist decision? A waitlist notification is not a rejection — the LOCI itself serves as the appropriate response. Formal “appeals” of waitlist decisions are not typically a defined process at art schools.
