QUICK ANSWER
ArtCenter and RISD ask for different portfolios because they admit students differently. ArtCenter Transportation Design asks for 3–5 original vehicle projects, each with research, sketches and a final rendering or 3D model. RISD asks every first-year applicant for 12–20 works, then starts students in a shared first year before they choose a major. RISD has no transportation design major.
So the choice is made early. A student who already knows they want to design vehicles needs a project portfolio built for ArtCenter; a student still exploring needs a broad body of work for RISD. In our record, both schools rarely fund admits: ArtCenter 5 of 43 (12%) and RISD 4 of 68 (6%).

These are the two lowest funding rates among the schools we report. Plan the budget on the assumption that no award arrives, and treat any award as a bonus.
FOR KOREAN STUDENTS
Korean entrance-art training builds strong observational drawing, but ArtCenter Transportation wants automotive sketching and original vehicle concepts shown as projects. Start vehicle projects at least a year ahead. For the wider ArtCenter process see ArtCenter admissions (Korean); for RISD see RISD questions.
